The highlights of the stage

The fifth and final stage of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta, Valtournenche > Breuil Cervinia of 119.5 km, concluded with the victory of Jarno Widar. The Belgian from Lotto Development Team won for the third consecutive day and, for the second year in a row, claimed the overall classification.

66 riders started, on a day characterized by an eight-man breakaway. The protagonists were Santiago Cruz (VF Group Bardiani CSF Faizanè), Baptiste Gillet (Arkea B&B Hotels), Filippo Agostinacchio (Biesse Carrera Premac), Nils Aebersold (Lidl Trek Future Racing), Lorenzo Masciarelli (MBH Bank Ballan CSB), Gauthier Sevranckx (Soudal Quick Step Devo Team), Victor Hannes (Wanty Nippo Re Uz), Pierre Henry Basset (XDS Astana Development Team).

The Aosta Valley rider Agostinacchio passed in first position at the intermediate sprints of Pont Saint Martin and Montjovet, thus securing victory in the intermediate sprints classification. The advantage of the breakaway never reached 3 minutes and their action was nullified 18 km from the finish.

When there were 8 km left to the finish, in the leading group remained Belgian Jarno Widar (Lotto Development Team), Slovenian Jakob Omrzel (Bahrain Victorious Development Team) and Irishman Liam O'Brien (Lidl Trek Future Racing). They fought for victory in a sprint where Widar beat Omrzel and O'Brien. At 49" arrived Matteo Scalco (VF Group Bardiani CSF Faizanè), Mateo Pablo Ramírez (UAE Team Emirates Gen Z) and Henrique Bravo (Soudal Quick Step Devo Team).

Widar writes his name for the second consecutive year in the winners' list of the Tour of Aosta Valley, as happened in the past to Ivan Gotti, Yaroslav Popovych, Marco Marzano and Fabio Aru. Together with the winner, Ecuadorian Mateo Pablo Ramírez climbed onto the podium in second place at 3'51", and Frenchman Jean Loup Fayolle (Arkea B&B Hotels) in third at 4'33".

Technical Info

For the fourth consecutive year, the race ends in the shadow of the Matterhorn. The first part is all downhill and flat until Pont Saint Martin where the duo of the Perloz and Fabiole climbs are tackled in quick succession. Once this phase is over, the route goes back up the valley, following the same roads as the outward journey. In Châtillon, the route takes the regional road 46 and its 28 km that lead to the finish line. A long and pedalable climb, with the most demanding section around the minus 5 km mark.

Last arrival in Breuil Cervinia: 21-07-2024, 5th stage Valtournenche - Breuil Cervinia, 95.5 km. Winner: Pablo Torres (Esp).

A short stroll in the square in front of the church of Valtournenche is enough to fully understand its spirit: visitors are charmed not only by the white bell tower or by the peaks of Grandes Murailles, but also by the tombstones affixed on the walls to remember the Alpine guides of the valley. They truly wrote the history of mountaineering and they were brave and skilled.
