The highlights of the stage

The third stage of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta, Pré-Saint-Didier > Great St. Bernard Pass of 81.7 km, opened with a moment of emotion: before the start, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Samuele Privitera, the young rider who died during the first stage. His family, present at the start in the front row together with his teammates and staff from Hagens Berman Jayco, expressed the wish that the race should continue to honor his memory.

After a neutralized section of 40 kilometers, the stage began with 125 riders. The breakaway that characterized the day was formed by Italians Tommaso Tessiore (UC Monaco) and Gabriele Bosio (General Store) and by Frenchman Jean Loup Fayolle (Arkea B&B Hotels), who passed in this order both at the KOM of Verrayes and at the intermediate sprint of Saint Christophe.

From the leading trio, the first to lose contact was Tessiore, while at the KOM of Doues, Fayolle extended his lead, remaining alone in front. Jarno Widar (Lotto Development Team) launched in pursuit, catching him at about 10 km from the finish before distancing him shortly after. The Belgian rider crossed the finish line dedicating his victory to Samuele Privitera.

Already known in Roman times as Prata ad Sanctum Desiderium as a military post along the Gauls Road, Pré-Saint-Didier started to face a slow but continue tourist development from the second half of the XVII century, when it became a well-known destination thanks to its hot springs. The town itself is deeply connected to this resource: in 1834 a new structure for the thermal baths was built, and the whole complex has been recently renovated. Today Pré-Saint-Didier, which is only a few kilometres away from the famous ski resorts of Courmayeur and La Thuile, keeps on being a true reference point for relax and wellness, but also a place that offers a rich tourist offer to its guests.

Looking at the map, the long range of the Alps seems to divide Europe in two from East to West. The mountain range opens routes for communication between the population of the south with that of the north.
The Great Saint Bernard is one of these routes: for a long time it was one of the main and oldest-known gateways.
