The highlights of the stage

The Valdigne is the protagonist of the second stage of the 59° Giro Ciclistico Internazionale della Valle d'Aosta Mont - Blanc starting from Courmayeur and arriving, after 125 kilometers, in Val Veny in the beautiful scenery of Pré de Pascal.
The group starts very fast and at the Sprint Catch of Saint Pierre, Andrea D'Amato (Biesse Carrera) prevails over Paul Buschek (Austria National Team) and Stefano Rizza (Team Hopplà). On the impulse of this acceleration takes advantage of a small group of fugitives that is increasingly thinner and uphill Edoardo Sandri (Q36.5), Mauricio Zapata (Colombia), Jorre Debaele (Basso Team Flanders) and Jonathan Vervenne (Soudal Quick Step) remain in discovery. Verrogne’s GPM, therefore, sees in the lead the passages of Vervenne on Sandri and Zapata. After the descent of Cerellaz, at the Sprint Catch of Avise, Rizza precedes Buschek and Debaele going to symbolically dress the red jersey of the sprints. The group of fugitives then takes the climb to Les Places in La Salle, with the group pulled by the Circus Re Uz of the yellow jersey Vandenstorme. At the GPM pass in order Vervenne, Valery Shtin (Cycling Team Friuli) and Sandri, with the group 30 seconds late. However, it was the interlocutory stages between Morgex and Pré Saint Didier that marked the race. In fact, David Joshua Golliker (Groupama FDJ) jumps forward from the fugitives and breaks the delays and with the passing of the kilometers he goes to gain seconds over seconds compared to the pursuers. Not even the very hard ramps towards Pré de Pascal stop the Briton who, on the contrary, increases his advantage and for him the last kilometers are a triumphal ride towards the stage victory and the yellow jersey. Behind him, in the last kilometres of the climb, the race explodes and the best of the group fight. On the finish line, then, 1 minute and 39 seconds from the winner comes Alexy Faure Prost (Circus King Uz), with Pavel Novak (Team Colpack Ballan) third at 1 minute and 45. As for the general rankings, at the end of the second stage, the yellow jersey Eaux Valdotaines is by DavidJoshua Golliker (Groupama FDJ), as well as the white of the young Matterhorn Ski Paradise and the blue points Valle d'Aosta,  the CVA polka dots jersey of the climbers instead goes to Jonathan Vervenne (Soudal Quick Step) while the red jersey Haute Savoye Le Département of sprints goes to Stefano Rizza (Team Hopplà).

Courmayeur lies at the foot of the Mont Blanc chain in a verdant amphitheatre surrounded by pine woods, mountains and glaciers. Even if it is an internationally well-known destination, Courmayeur still keeps an authentic Alpine atmosphere, which is noticeable both when having shopping in the town centre and when having a stroll in the hamlets that surround the town centre that arrive until the beginning of the central valley, where the Veny and Ferret streams flow in the Dora Baltea.
