Stage 1: MORILLON / MORILLLON (Les Esserts)
Robert Power keeps the yellow jersey as race leader. Day two at Giro della Valle d’Aosta, sees the success of the Belgian Laurens De Plus, who defeated at the sprint the leader of the GC, after 153 incredible kilometres. Ready, steady, go: soon a breakaway by 4 riders which seems to be set to an end, in the second chasing group the American TJ Eisenhart of BMC Team and Nicola Bagioli of Zalf. The escape ends almost in the final kilometres of the stage, as well as the second chasing group.
Bagioli (Zalf) wears the first mountain classification jersey, Davide Ballerini (Unieuro) does the same with the sprint catch one.
Many surprises tought today at the Morillon - Les Essert: Diego Pablo Sevilla of Fundacion Alberto Contador – who was into the second chasing group composed by 12 riders – reached the first group, being for a while the leader with a minute ahead. Bagioli and Salvador, riding together, forced the pace along the last descent and got first, but the fantastic action made by Australian Team at 60 kilometres to go had a positive finale: Robert Power and a fragmented group chased the leaders along the last ascent towards Morillon - Les Esserts, and the Belgian moked the Yellow Jersey.
«I didn't expect to keep the lead of the GC – says the Australian – but my team pushed so much, and brought me on the first group».
«I'm really happy for this victory, – says an incredulous Laurens De Plus – especially according the evolution of the race at a certain point. Then, kilometer after kilometer I closed on the group and I tried to dispute the sprint, and winning it»
