Stage 2: VILLENEUVE / LES COMBES D'INTROD

The breakaway made it right in the second stage of the 54th edition of Giro Valle d’Aosta: it’s the Belgian Harm Vanhoucke, wearing the club jersey of Lotto Soudal U23, to raise the hands to the sky on the finish line of Les Combes d’Introd. A great performance for the young rider who got this stage, considered the Liege-Bastogne-Liege of the Alps. The definitive action happened in the first part of the stage: from the start from Villeneuve, just few kilometres later and the first of 14 climbs to let the breakaway to go. Six riders: with the Belgian, there were also Hafetab Weldu (Dimension Data for Quebeka), Evgeny Kobernyak (National Russian Team), Massimo Rosa, Alessandro Monaco e Andrea Montagnoli (Team Hopplà Petroli Firenze). The action made by the Italian team has been fatal to maintain the leadership in a couple of classifications: the KOM one led by Massimo Rosa and the Sprint Catch led by Andrea Montagnoli. The pack, in the back, has been mixed by the actions of Team Colpack (working for the Yellow Jersey Giovanni Carboni), and by BMC Devo Team (working for Pavel Sivakov). The gap has been kept around 4 minutes. Champlong (KOM of 2nd category), and the following gravel sector have been the key points of today’s stage: in the head of the breakaway, after the white road stint, the solo action of Vanhoucke started, leaving Rosa and Monaco. Behind Sivakov has been the first to attack just before the gravel: to follow the second overall, has been the yellow jersey. At the solo win by the Belgian, on the podium also Massimo Rosa and Alessandro Monaco with three minutes of gap. Then at 3:14 the trio composed by Carboni, Sivakov, and Nikolay Cherkasov. Nothing changes for the first to places of the GC: it’s still just a matter of a second between Giovanni Carboni and Pavel Sivakov. Only the Belgian Lambrecht (Lotto Soudal U23) maintain his gap under the minute. Yellow jersey owns also the blue one, the symbol of Points classification. Massimo Rosa is still the King of Mountains with 44 points and Andrea Montagnoli is still leading the Sprint Catch classification with 14 points. The owner of the U20 white jersey is the Colombian Einer Augusto Rubio Eyes (Team Vejus) who leads with 3 mins of advantage and beats the Swiss Marc Hirschi (BMC Devo Team), as the prevous owner.

Stage 2: VILLENEUVE / LES COMBES D'INTROD

km. 138.4

On Friday, July 14, the stage is scheduled from Villeneuve to Les Combes of Introd, definitely abnormal compared to the "common stages" of Giro Valle d'Aosta. Lots of tiny and short climbs, 2 or 3 km of max lenght, throughout the course and no remarkable ascents, except for the final one. But along the 138km of the route there won't be a flat kilometre. A couple of laps around a circuit at the start of 58 km: at first through Introd then to Saint-Pierre and Sarre along narrow and difficult roads before facing the ramp of Charvensod - ramp which will be replaced by Clappey di Gressan) and finally back to Villeneuve: in the middle also two sprints at Pollein. After the second pass on the starting line the peloton will turn left and go to Champlong di Villeneuve: at the end of the ascent a section of 4 km of white roads before the descent towards Chevrère and Introd then the final climb to Les Combes.
